I wasn’t lucky enough to be born in Del Rey, but I’ve been smart enough to call this amazing, diverse community home for the last seven years. Since joining the Del Rey Neighborhood Council Board in 2008 and becoming President in 2010 I’ve worked hard personally and with other Board members to put “neighbor” back into neighborhood. Every time I shake a hand with someone at the Del Rey Art Walk or enjoy time with families and their young listening to the sounds of the Del Rey Community Jazz Band in Glen Alla Park I feel our great community is really putting itself on the map in Los Angeles. Maintaining events like these and supporting countless others that bring neighbors together for fun, support, and connection will be my top priority as your Del Rey Neighborhood Council President.

Thank you for your support.

I am presently the elected Vice President of the Del Rey Neighborhood Council. I am running for re-election because I care about improving the quality of life of those who live and work in Del Rey. I believe we still have a lot of work to do to improve safety in our neighborhoods and create better public transportation and mobility options for the citizens of Del Rey.

Marlene Savage

I moved to Del Rey in 2003 and started to notice that the light industrial companies were starting to move out and wondered what was going to happen. In 2005, the Land Use and Planning Chair of the Del Rey Neighborhood Council distributed flyers to come to a meeting and find out what was going to happen across the street from me. The rest is history and I ran for the Board in 2006 and continued until 2010 and had the pleasure of serving both as Parliamentarian and 1 st Vice President. Based on what I was learning I became involved in the land use and planning committee, outreach and community liaison which was the bridge between how to get things done and who was the contact in the city that could make it happen. I was and still am deeply committed to ensuring our community the best “Quality of Life”.

I’m running for a seat on the Board because I want to join the DRNC’s efforts to influence positive change in our neighborhood. My primary interests are land use, sustainability, traffic, crime prevention and beautification. But, Del Rey is not an island. What happens in Culver City impacts Del Rey. We shouldn’t be bystanders. If elected, I’ll work to establish a relationship with Culver City and it’s western neighborhood/business associations so our voices are heard. The DRNC has great potential. I want to make it relevant to it’s stakeholders so more people will get involved in building a better community.
During the day, I’m attorney with a software company. Until my sons graduated from high school, I was involved in their schools, most recently as the president of a parent group that organizes monthly meetings on student/ parent/ education issues.

My decision to move to the Del Rey area was based largely on conversations with friends who live here. I have spent the past two years as a member of the Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council, serving both as a Board Member and a Committee Chair. The empowerment of individuals and the strength of the community depend on one another, and I look forward to ensuring those bonds are strong. I am eager to contribute what I can from my background in the nonprofit, education, political and small business sectors.

Maureen Madison

I have enjoyed living in Del Rey since 1999. With over 30 years experience in small business management including financial management I believe I am an excellent candidate for the position of Treasurer for our NC. My goal is to improve the quality of life in our community and thereby increase it’s desirability as a neighborhood in which to live and work.

I truly enjoy living, working and socializing in Del Rey. Formerly, I spent 15 years working on municipal economic development issues. I now focus my efforts on assisting business owners sell their firms and restaurants. I am also a partner in a small commercial architecture firm.

My background in municipal economic development affords me a deep understand of how city government works. My experience owning an architecture firm gives an even greater understanding of planning and entitlement issues.

Although, my greatest passion lies in creating a sense of community where we as neighbors, are also a solid and supportive community. Del Rey has a foundation with the Art Walk and the new Farmer’s Market. I’d like to help organize other events and venues to bring us together as a community, while representing Del Rey on the city issues that affects us.

I am a recent transplant to the Del Rey neighborhood and I love the community atmosphere and would like to be a part of what makes it work. I have done Board development as part of a 25-year career in nonprofit management and feel I am well qualified for the Parliamentarian position.

I am proud to represent Del Rey’s Area A for more than 6 years. As a member of the Del Rey Community for more than 18 years, I have seen it evolve, becoming a vibrant neighborhood. But there is still work to be done. There is a homeless crisis in Los Angeles that requires attention. The schools are underfunded and new and creative ways to keep our children motivated are needed. Traffic and ease of getting from place to place is a nightmare. Smart planning and transportation solutions should be implemented. Del Rey is a great diverse community that has many strong representatives. With their help, and the help of all community stakeholders, we can continue to see Del Rey evolve and grow while remaining the most interested neighborhood most Angelinos have never heard of.

I’ve been a happy homeowner in Marina del Rey since 2003. Before that, I served as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the 9 years I lived in a Torrance condominium community. I like the idea of problem-solving and helping to nurture a safe and friendly living environment. I’ve been self-employed since 1989. I teach computer skills, create training presentations and videos, and prepare user guides, handouts, and many other types of documents. Hopefully some of these skills can come in handy for the neighborhood!

Peter Hsu

I am a real estate investor that loves my neighborhood. I believe that we should do our best to be neighborly and foster a sense of community when in a city as large as LA. I do not believe that the Del Rey neighborhood council should concern itself with larger issues like global warming and chronic homelessness. The budget is $37,000 a year. I think projects like clean parks and farmers markets and nice paved roads are where we should focus. Also, I think we can put on fun and educational activities that many in the community can enjoy and in doing so, foster a greater sense of neighborliness.

Since 2004 I have been the Area C Director increasing the outreach efforts for Stakeholders, opening communication by delivering timely information. My duty is to bring Stakeholder concerns to the Council getting their needs met.A primary goal is to increase Outreach with participation and sponsorship of activities that benefit our community and its youth. Having completed City-placed Del Rey signage around our district borders and pushing to have streets re-surfaced and alleys paved. From 2005-2009 I was Chair of Del Rey Day, the annual neighborhood festival. Those five years were resoundingly successful bringing the residents of Del Rey together. My goal is to continue serving the Stakeholders with dedication.

Iricel Payano

When I arrived here from the East Coast, I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. My big plans to move to LA quickly seemed too general for the expanse city that Los Angeles truly is. Upon arriving here, the big question was where exactly would I choose. Staying with a friend in Del Rey for the first two months, it all fell into place.
I loved running on the trail down Culver Boulevard and attending the Del Rey Farmer’s Market. I looked forward to events like the Del Rey Cup. Talking to my friend, I discovered the tremendous work done by members of the community to make these things possible. Beyond calling this home, I didn’t want to be an idle member of the community, but to be as deeply involved as possible; luckily the Neighborhood Council provides just this opportunity.

Felipe Arballo

I am excited about the opportunity to be involved with and support the community of Del Rey. I am originally from Southern California, but spent the majority of my adult life in the Central Valley, graduating from Cal State University, Fresno (MA) and University of Phoenix (MPA). My public interest service includes substitute teaching, participating as a Parks and Recreation Committee member, and as a member of my political party’s Central Committee. Currently I work in the private sector for UHaul, Inc., as an Assistant General Manager. As your Area C Officer, I will bring Arts events to our neighborhood, such as an annual festival including music competition that would be a standout in the City and County of LA, drawing local focus and commerce to our community. Thank you for your time and vote; I look forward to serving you.

I was born, raised, live, work & play in Del Rey. I consider myself luck to have been raised amongst a diverse comminity and near the beach. My background is in the arts and I would love to see a place where our youth can come together after school and do art and/or their homework in peace while their parents are at work. I’d also like to establish other community events and help where help is needed.

I would like to contribute my skills and make a positive difference in my community. Great community-improving ideas can come from anywhere, and they need champions and support to be put into action. When we work together, we can enable such endeavors to thrive in our community, and that is my goal. In particular, I would like to organize a green committee and if elected, I will support projects and ideas that will help us build a more sustainable and beautiful Del Rey. I have a degree in Film and Digital Media and a minor in Sociology from UCSC, am studying Interior Architectural Design at SMC, and have extensive administrative experience including Accounting, HR, Office Management, and Marketing. As an analytical person, I will do the research, and then carefully and responsibly consider the needs of individuals as well as the community as a whole before making decisions.

Happily represented Del Rey’s Area H for over a year, after working in lovely Del Rey for 3 years. Member of the Del Rey Residents Association. Worked hard myself and with other DRNC Board members to improve the quality of life for everyone in Del Rey.
As a landlord and active Realtor, I bring my knowledge of Real Estate, business experience and sense of humour to all our monthly meetings and the Land Use & Planning meetings. Pleased to have personally co-sponsored the Del Rey Art Walk & the new Del Rey Farmer’s Market which I helped develop. I’m there every Friday to support its improvement & ensure it’s longevity. The Del Rey Farmer’s Market and the Del Rey Community Jazz Band are two of our finest achievements this year.
Just over a year ago I personally got rid off the late night noise nuisance from the Night Club in Mesmer Triangle.

Cory Watkins-Suzuki

I am seeking appointment as a Area H Director in the Del Rey Neighborhood Council. As a Del Rey Native, I wish to bring representation to the neighborhood council from someone who was born and raised in Del Rey. I am an Eagle Scout from Troop 764 (VJCC), I am active in the Venice Japanese Community Center, Board Member of the Del Rey Residents Association, and I live in Del Rey (Area H). If elected, my hope is that I will be able to voice the concerns of Area “H” Residents who seek change in our developing community. I will be honored to serve the community as Area H Director. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Cory Watkins-Suzuki
