It’s hard to believe the 2014 Neighborhood Council Elections journey has come to a close. There is a lot to look back on and many successes along the way to celebrate as we welcome new Board members to their leadership positions. But before Neighborhood Councils get back to business as usual, we want to pause and thank our over 600 volunteers who made the Elections process possible.
Our volunteers exemplify what makes our city great. With smiling faces and a contagious enthusiasm, they processed hundreds upon hundreds of registration forms, leafed through piles of ballots, and guided voters through each step as they participated in grassroots democracy.
Pam Woncik was a regular at the Elections, and her poll managers would admit they wouldn’t have made it through the busy elections without her help.
Why’d she join EmpowerLA? “I’m recently retired, but I always wanted to work at a polling place. I never had the time. This is my first opportunity and I’m so glad that I finally did!”
We’re sure glad she decided to fulfill that dream by joining us at the polls!
Says Matt Wolf, who just made LA his home less than 2 years ago: “By working at these elections I’ve met lots of voters and candidates from all kinds of backgrounds and learned about their concerns and outlooks, which has been an important education for me as a citizen. I’ve seen the way Neighborhood Councils at their best can be so closely and effectively engaged both with regular people and with the institutions of governance at City Hall.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
For those who have had the pleasure of working with Matt, Pam, or any of our other star volunteers, you know what a difference their positive energy made at the polls. They might be humble about the role they’ve played in this important process, but we know it’s important to put names to the faces many of us have come across while voting in the NC Elections.
We want to hear from the rest of our volunteers– what motivated you to join EmpowerLA for the Elections journey? How was your experience? We would love to hear your feedback!
