I hope our newsletter finds you well. I’m really pleased to introduce our new Director of Neighborhood Council Operations, Semee Park. Semee comes to EmpowerLA from her previous position as Legislative Deputy for Councilmember Mitch Englander. Under Councilmember Englander’s excellent leadership these past 8 years, Semee has much experience in community matters and in effective legislation so I’m excited that she has joined our team to support the Neighborhood Councils. Semee will be working with our Valley team out of office in the Valley City Hall. Welcome, Semee!

It was nice to get out to the Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils monthly meeting last night where LADWP General Manager David Wright presented on the LADWP’s proposed Customer Bill of Rights. The Customer Bill of Rights will be going before the LADWP Commission for a vote on Tuesday, January 17th, though David assured everyone that it is a living document and could be updated with feedback from Neighborhood Councils and the public in the future. So check it out and weigh in on it!

Kudos to Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council for partnering with Councilmember Joe Buscaino to bring three 5th grade classes from 116th Street School for a tour of City Hall today! Some of the kids serve on the school’s student council so they received a great look at how local government works in Los Angeles. Thanks to CM Buscaino, HGNNC and their Youth Representative, Richard Lee, for connecting City Hall with the next generation of leaders!

I’m looking forward to the Clean Streets LA Challenge Awards tomorrow in the Board of Public Works where Mayor Eric Garcetti will be honoring grant awardees, including 31 Neighborhood Councils! Many thanks to our Neighborhood Councils who stepped up to participate and received awards from $750 – $5,000.

Don’t forget that our offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Have a wonderful weekend!
