GM’s Message 5.5.17

I hope our newsletter finds you well. This has been a busy week with City Council reviewing Mayor Eric Garcetti’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2017-2018. We were up to speak on our budget request to City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee on Monday after the Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates gave a great presentation on their white paper.
A lot of work goes into the City’s budget process so I really want to appreciate Mayor Garcetti’s budget team, interim CAO Richard Llwellyn and his budget team, CLA Sharon Tso and her budget team and the City Councilmembers and their budget folks, particularly the Budget and Finance Committee members: Chair Councilmember Paul Krekorian, Councilmember Mitch Englander, Councilmember Nury Martinez, Councilmember Bob Blumenfield and Councilmember Mike Bonin. Special thanks to Councilmembers Krekorian and Englander for recommending additional funding for our request on board member training in yesterday’s budget hearing! Many thanks also to our staff for helping to put our budget together, particularly Director of Administrative Services, Armando Ruiz, and of course to our Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates for their amazing work on the budget! The Budget and Finance Committee will continue their budget meetings into next week before sending their proposals to the full City Council for final review and approval. You can watch the hearings from this week by clicking here.
In between the budget hearings, I was happy to join the last session of the Welcome Home Project: Neighborhood Council Civic University on Homelessness on Monday to congratulate the graduates on participating in such a great program. BIG thanks to the Mayor’s Office of Public Engagement for coordinating these sessions with us! The Neighborhood Council Homelessness Liaisons will be having their next meeting on May 31st (more info to come).
On Tuesday, I had a great time at Councilmember David Ryu’s Fresh Off the Boat Day celebrating May’s Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Mayor Garcetti and City Council President Herb Wesson joined Councilmember Ryu in honoring the cast and creators of the television show, Fresh Off the Board. You can check out the month long events celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture at our awesome Department of Cultural Affairs website.
We also added another country, Germany, to our ever growing list of international delegations coming to learn about the Neighborhood Council system on Tuesday. Thanks to Director of Neighborhood Council Operations, Semee Park, for taking the lead in welcoming them and introducing them to Neighborhood Councils. We’re expecting another delegation from Venezuela to visit us at the end of the month.
Our staff will be out and about citywide tomorrow at Neighborhood Council events from the LANCC to Council President Wesson’s CD 7 Town Hall Workshop at Pacoima City Hall to introduce City services to Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council’s selection to PICO Neighborhood Council’s Spring Fling.
As always, thanks to all the amazing work that you do to Empower LA! Have a wonderful wet weekend!
