Neighborhood Council elections season starts this Sunday December 16th, when candidate filing opens for Hollywood area Councils! To kick off the elections season – which runs through June 20, 2019 – EmpowerLA hosted a holiday gathering at City Hall that brought community organizations together with Neighborhood Council Outreach and Elections Committee members.

At the gathering, Neighborhood Council board members worked with organizations serving their area on regional candidate recruitment and election awareness plans, and each of our 2019 Elections staff spoke to the audience about their role in the upcoming elections. Among those introduced were community development volunteers DeAnthus Cowell and Mateo Gil, who work with grassroots leadership development nonprofit Public Allies, and PR and marketing specialists Suzanne Lewis (publicist and board member of NC Valley Village); Evan White (digital media specialist and Venice NC Communications Director); and Jens Midthun (social media marketer and member of millennial leadership organization Global Shapers, an affiliate of the World Economic Forum).

The Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils (VANC) also kindly invited us to present an overview of our Department’s outreach plans for the 2019 Elections at their monthly meeting on Thursday, December 13th. Photos from both events are below.

In 2019, the City Clerk will be administering all Neighborhood Council Elections, while EmpowerLA will focus on Elections-related outreach, including both Citywide Neighborhood Council awareness campaigns, and working with individual Councils to help them engage their stakeholders to vote or run for office.
