The Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance  is pleased to partner with the Mayor’s Office to support the City’s new “Save the Drop” campaign and aggressive water conservation goals. An immediate priority for water conservation is reducing residential water use through lawn conversion to California-Friendly Landscaping using a watershed-based approach.

Neighborhood Councils are vital to the success of this effort. Please join the NCSA at our next workshop on Saturday, May 16, and help shape a lawn conversion program that Neighborhood Councils across the City can implement!

Come share your unique knowledge of your neighborhood and help us identify:

  • What are the barriers to lawn transformation in your neighborhood or community?
  • What types of programs can the NCSA or the City develop for Neighborhood Councils to overcome these barriers? How can we most effectively foster lawn conversion across Neighborhood Councils?
  • What resources do Neighborhood Councils need to be successful?
  • How should Neighborhood Councils and the City measure the effectiveness of the program?

This will be a highly interactive workshop. Following a presentation by the Mayor’s Office on the City’s new “Save the Drop” drought response campaign and the role of Neighborhood Councils, there will be time for questions and answers before we discuss the lawn conversion initiative. We will also set aside time for brief (2-minute) reports on up to five local sustainability policy issues of interest to attendees. If there is a specific council file or issue you’d like to report on or see addressed, please let us know by emailing info.ncsa@gmail.com.

Additionally, special guest HoneyLove, a Los Angeles-based non-profit conservation organization with a mission to protect honeybees by educating our communities and inspiring new urban beekeepers, will share an update on the City’s draft backyard beekeeping ordinance (Council File 12-0785), and will be available before and after the program to speak with attendees and share resources that you can take back to your Neighborhood Council.

The NCSA strives to minimize its event footprint. Please help by bringing a reusable water bottle to the event and sharing a ride or using sustainable forms of transportation if feasible. Travel directions can be found here.
