News from Field Operations 5.30.14

I hope our newsletter finds you well and that you are gearing up for a nice weekend.

I want to say thank you to all those who showed up to our Ethics & Open Government and Funding Trainings on Thursday May 29th at the Glassell Park Senior Citizen Center.  We had fantastic representation by Neighborhood Councils from the East and Central Areas as well as other parts of the City.  There were over 70 people in attendance which means 70 more of you are able to serve your communities by voting on all items on your agendas since you’ve now  complied with this important requirement.

The session was conducted by the City Attorney’s Office, represented by Ms. Alois Phillips.  We also featured our very knowledgeable Funding Team, which was represented by Betty Won-Oyama. Those of you who know and have dealt with Betty, can attest to the fact that she does not miss a beat. The Funding Training covered the requirement for treasurers, p-card holders and second signatories.

Assisting on site with logistics, guidance and trouble-shooting were our veteran field staff Melvin Canas and Lisette Covarrubias.

The entire team put on a great event and the Department is very appreciative of their efforts. Thanks to the 70 plus individuals who are now fully trained on Ethics and Funding!

We continue with our Leadership Academy track on compliance and meeting your obligations as elected officials that you are.  Our next training on Ethics and Funding will be held on  Wednesday, June 18th, 2014  from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the Council District 9 Field Office located at 4301 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011.   Please save the date!  You can RSVP your attendance at this link:  We look forward to seeing you there!

I am very excited to report that we continue conducting our basic board orientation through our Leadership Academy and as of today we have trained 60 Neighborhood Councils!  60 NCs have given us the opportunity to come in and provide you with our  90 minute basic board orientation.  It has been a difficult task given our staffing levels, however we are very happy that we can come out to you and give you that one on one assistance. In the last couple of weeks, we visited groups like Empowerment Congress Southwest; Mid City NC; West Adams NC; Los Feliz NC; Rampart Village NC; Glassell Park NC; Greater Cypress Park NC; Silver Lake NC; Empowerment Congress Southeast; West LA NC; and Pico Union NC.  We certainly appreciate you making time for us on your busy agenda.

Speaking of agendas, please know that we are still available through our to review and post your agendas.  We provide you valuable feedback so that you can improve your agendas, if need be, and narrow the realm of possibilities for a grievance to be filed against your board  because your process fell short.

As always, thank you for all the great work that you do to support your community and this great system of Neighborhood Councils!

If you have any questions, please contact us at or via telephone at (213) 978-1551.  Have a great weekend!
