County officials and community leaders celebrated the official opening of a five-acre greenway at the headwaters of the Los Angeles River on Saturday.
The $11.5 million LA River Headwaters Project – the river’s biggest greenway project so far – provides cyclists, walkers and runners access to 2.5 miles of trails (1 ¼ miles on each side). The path begins at Owensmouth Avenue in Canoga Park where Bell and Calabasas creeks meet to form the river and continues to Mason Avenue in Winnetka.
Ann Young and her 94-year-old father John Young have been riding recumbent trikes along the river path since it opened about two months ago.
“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” she said.
The renovations include pedestrian bridges, rain gardens, benches, educational and interpretive signs and drought-tolerant native landscaping. The project also creates new habitat for wildlife, including 300 species of migratory birds which rest along the river. (Continue reading at Post-Periodical)
