Workshop Recommendations For New Boardmembers

Since the Congress offers over 40 fabulous workshops each year, it can be difficult choosing which workshops you want to take – especially if you are a new Neighborhood Council board member attending the Congress for the first time.

Everyone is welcome to attend any workshop that they wish, but the recommendations below are especially suited to new boardmembers.

If you haven’t yet fulfilled your required Ethics training (or if your certificate has expired), you can get certified if you take Ethics Part 1 and 2. You must take both workshops (Session 3 & 4) in order to get your certificate.

If you haven’t completed your funding training, the Funding Mechanics class covers some of that material.

Other basic classes that will help you launch your Neighborhood Council career include Board Basics 101; How To Run A Successful Meeting; Leadership Skills; Bylaws and Standing Rules; and Parliamentary Procedure.

In Memoriam Submissions

For 2016, the Congress has a new In Memoriam section to recognize the passing of Neighborhood Council Leaders and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Neighborhood Council System and their communities. The person would have had to have passed within the last 12 months.

Please submit by September 2nd to NCCongress@EmpowerLA.org and include a photo as well as a brief bio (50 words Max) about the person. Memorials will appear in the “In Memoriam” section of the NC Congress Program; on our website; and in a special display at the Congress at City Hall on September 24th.
