For Councils with online elections, the unofficial canvass of votes will generally be posted the night of the elections. For Councils with traditional polls, ballots are counted at the City Clerk’s office on the next business day, and the unofficial canvass of votes is generally posted by midday of that day. If there are provisional ballots, the deadline for submission of acceptable documents is 3 calendar days (by 5pm), unless the deadline falls on a weekend or a city holiday. Recounts may be requested within 3 calendar days after the election, unless the deadline falls on a weekend or a city holiday. Challenges to the election are accepted within the 5 calendar days (by 5pm) after the election.
A Final Official Certified Canvass of Votes after recounts, provisional, and challenges are resolved. This can take place as early as 5pm of the 5th day after the election.
Observers are welcome to attend the ballot count at the City Clerk’s office downtown, which is located at Piper Tech 555 Ramirez Street Room 375 Los Angeles, CA 90012 (behind Union Station.) All counting begins at 9 am the first business day following the election. (Provisional ballots are not included in this counting process, as they are not opened until 3 calendar days after the election has passed.)
