This past Saturday, EmpowerLA partnered with the Mayor’s Innovation Team to hold a three-hour educational Neighborhood Election Workshop for youth and their parents at City Hall. The participants learned the basics of how to run a successful election campaign from the experts and also got to meet and network with other young Angelenos also running for a seat on their local Neighborhood Council. Neighborhoods represented included Eagle Rock, Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, Silver Lake, Elysian Valley and Empowerment Congress Southwest Area.

The workshop also included a discussion of what it means to be a Board Member of a Neighborhood Council, how to sign people up to vote and activities to develop and hone in on the participants’ core message as to why they make an excellent candidate – both in person and on social media. Throughout the workshop, youth shared their qualifications and reasons for wanting to become civic leaders with one another before presenting in front of the group.

EmpowerLA and the Mayor’s Innovation Team are excited to continue working with the new generation of candidates who are interested in participating and making a difference with local government. Thank you so much to Julienne Chen and Kimberly Rodriguez from the Mayor’s Innovation Team, and Jay Handel, EmpowerLA’s Neighborhood Council Elections Administrator for making this workshop a great success.
