FAIRS AND EVENTS
Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council
Arroyo Seco brought live music and dancing to their local senior center, with a performance by Jack Maeby's Giving Music band. Giving Music is a nonprofit organization of top professional musicians and vocalists from around the LA area, who perform popular songs from the 1940s-50s at local senior centers. Venice Neighborhood Council
Held annually since 2006, the Venice Community BBQ and Potluck Picnic is hosted by the Venice Neighborhood Council. The Council provides the meat; locals are asked to bring their favorite side dishes to share. (Photos by Edizen Stowell for VenicePaparazzi.com)
Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council
Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council's SONC Summer Series presents family-friendly movies all summer long at the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Recreation Center, in partnership with City Council District 4. A commuity picnic is followed by bubbles, hula hoops, frisbees, shaved ice, and popcorn. Over 300 stakeholders and their families attend each of the monthly events.
Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council
The Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council hosts an annual Poker Ride where participants on horseback collect their cards at stations along the route. The event raises awareness of the needs and lifestyle of the equestrian community in that area. (Photos via Foothill Trails Facebook.)
West LA-Sawtelle Neighborhood Council
Every July and August since 2009, West LA-Sawtelle Neighborhood Council has hosted Friday night "Movies On The Lawn," in partnership with Stoner Recreation Center and City Council District 11. WLASNC provides free snacks and juice drinks for kids, and local businesses provide fun raffle prizes to the crowd. Information tables are set up by local organizations and city agencies like LAPD, who educates attendees about public safety. Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council
Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council annually sponsors the Cevapcici Festival, which celebrates the cuisines and cultures of the San Pedro area.(Photos by Slobodan Dimitrov.)
Del Rey Neighborhood Council
Local entertainers - including the Del Rey Community Jazz Band - are one of the highlights of the Del Rey Neighborhood Council's annual Del Rey Day. Besides food and family fun, the event always strives to offer stakeholders access to resources such as free smoke alarms and trainings on vital emergency preparedness skills (Photos via DRNC Facebook.)
Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council
Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council offers free yoga classes to the community at Robert Burns Park. Classes happen daily at 10 am (9:30 early class Fridays), and all are welcome. Robert Burns Park is located at 4900 Beverly Blvd 90004.
Festivals and fairs celebrate the personality and character of a community and Neighborhood Councils host festivals that include cultural events, concerts and movies in the park, bike rodeos, health and job fairs, public safety and emergency events, and celebrations for seniors and youth.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment has grown into the nation’s largest and most innovative initiative in civic engagement and citizen-based government through the “EmpowerLA” movement. With a network of 97 Neighborhood Councils, Los Angeles promotes public participation in government and works to improve government responsiveness to local concerns.
