I hope our newsletter finds you well. Although I’ve been out sick most of this week, I’m happy to say that our EmpowerLA team was hard at work handling all things Neighborhood Councils from elections to funding to meeting operations to outreach. Many thanks to my managers, Leyla Campos, Armando Ruiz, Stephen Box and Mike Fong for keeping everything running smoothly! In addition to a funding training this week, we had TUX Bootcamps in West LA and the Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday night. If you haven’t had a chance to participate in one, I highly recommend it so you can learn and share techniques to be more effective at outreach in your community. With elections around the corner, we know you’ll put these tools to good use.

roncontrollerSpeaking of great outreach tools, I was so pleased to receive Controller (and former Neighborhood Council board member) Ron Galperin’s newsletter this week. One of his articles highlighted his talk at the Congress of Neighborhoods about his work, particular on his amazing ControlPanel LA. To stay connected with Ron, like his Controller Facebook page.

A reminder that the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners will be meeting on Monday at City Hall at 1 pm. Commission agendas and minutes can be found on our website here. The Commission will be considering a policy requiring Neighborhood Councils to take minutes for their meetings. If you’d like to comment on any of the issues and can’t make the meeting, please email your comments to Commission@empowerla.org. The Commission will also determine whether to take any further action on the CF 12-1681, which establishes a subdivision policy for Neighborhood Councils.  The City Council Rules, Elections, Intergovernmental Relations and Neighborhood Committee approved the policy today with an instruction to the CAO to consider during the budget process the staffing needs to implement the policy. Much appreciation to Councilmember Jose Huizar for championing the subdivision policy these last several years!

Tomorrow is the regional Neighborhood Council Budget Day. You’ll have the opportunity to weigh in on budget issues in 6 locations citywide. For more information, click here. Many thanks to the hard working Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates for their efforts!

If I don’t see you this weekend, have a great one!

Best,
Grayce Liu,
General Manager
Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (aka) EmpowerLA
