We’re launching a new NC Spotlight series on our blog and in our newsletter to highlight some of the great achievements of Neighborhood Councils and board members across the City! Check out this week’s news below from Harbor Gateway North NC and NC Valley Village.

If you’re interested in submitting your own NC highlights for inclusion, we’d love to hear your stories! See the info at the end of this article on how (and when) to send us your news.

Harbor Gateway North NC

Congratulations to Harbor Gateway North NC Chair Pamela Thornton, who just graduated from the LA African American Women’s Public Policy Institute!

Pamela completed LAAAWPPI’s 10-week intensive, comprehensive leadership and public policy training program. This groundbreaking program – which is offered in partnership with USC – aims to prepare women of color to run for elected office, manage political campaigns, seek government appointments, or advance in the corporate world.

LAAAWPPI has strong ties to the Neighborhood Council system, as President of the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners, Joy Atkinson, serves as their Executive Director. Learn more at https://LAAAWPPI.net

NC Valley Village

NC Valley Village‘s recent Earth Day Onsite Shredding Event literally moved mountains (of recyclables), shredding 5 tons of waste paper and collecting over 200 lbs of batteries! A steady stream of cars came by from 8 am till noon, to drop off recyclables and food donations for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry. Paper was shredded on-site; meanwhile, several boxes of lightbulbs and the batteries were taken by volunteers Melinda Porter and Alice Hart to the LA Sanitation recycling facility in Sun Valley.

NC Valley Village would like to thank the office of CD2 City Councilmember Paul Krekorian; the Department of Recreation and Parks; and all the volunteers whose hard work made this event such a success. As they like to say,”It takes a Village. Valley Village!”
